Like many small businesses, Back Creek Home & Yard was built on a dream.
Growing up in a blue-collar, single-paycheck family has taught me many lessons that have led me to where I am today - pursuing my dream of Back Creek Home & Yard. As one of seven children, there was rarely a time when nothing was broken, torn, or worn out. Instead of throwing it away and buying something new, we were taught to fix, mend, or refurbish items to get the most life possible out of them. We didn’t have the option to buy something new and just “throw money away.” Even at an early age, I learned how to work on, repair, replace, and maintain just about everything around the house.
Entering into adulthood, I worked in the new construction business framing, installing windows, doors, and siding, and doing trim work and roofing. However, as my wife, Michelle, and I started our family, it became clear that health insurance and a steady paycheck were priority, so I left construction for the Steel Mill. Nevertheless, I still get a sense of pride and accomplishment seeing those houses today, knowing I helped bring those buildings to life and become homes to families.
During the next couple decades, I continued to do projects and repairs on our house as well as family and friends’ homes. After 27 years working in the industrial sector, and two grown children who moved on to start their own families, Michelle and I realized it was time to chase our dreams. For me, that meant running my own business. More direction came in the way of a tree crushing our house during a severe storm. We decided to do most of the rebuilding ourselves and I couldn’t have predicted how much pride I would have living in a house we rebuilt. This solidified my path forward to start Back Creek Home & Yard.
Looking back on all of the work and projects I’ve done, nothing beats the feeling I get when I help a family member or friend with a project. It is with this in mind that Back Creek Home & Yard was built on the promise of treating everyone like a family member, friend, or neighbor that needs a little help to get something done. We will be respectful, honest, transparent, and maybe have a few laughs during our time together, and at the end we can stand back together and take pride and enjoy the sense of accomplishment on a job well done.
As the saying goes, “if you do what you love, you never work a day in your life.” Michelle and I are now pursuing what we love to do, not only for ourselves but for our children and grandchildren. It is our hope that by our example, they too, will never give up on their dreams.
